Ñanta's main feature is its canteen.
The NATs have nutrition problems because the price of food is too high for their large families. They eat little fruit, few vegetables and almost never eat meat. Their diet consists exclusively of rice, potatoes and pasta when they are able to eat. Generally they don't have an evening meal. For these reasons the nutritive aspect of the centre is essential.
From Monday to Saturday the centre provides the NATs with lunch. This service consists of a soup with bread, dessert and a soft drink or a second course with a soft drink. They pay a symbolic 50 centavos, which is less than half the cost of the meal. The centre doesn't give the food for free so that the children value the meal and don't get used to receiving things for nothing.
At 4.30 pm from Monday to Friday tea, api (a local corn-based drink) or cocoa is served with two pieces of bread. The price is also 50 centavos (two pieces of bread cost 50 centavos in Bolivia).
We make bread every two weeks, which permits us to have more nutritious bread and at the same time help the children learn about baking.
Once a month, we make a cake and serve it free with tea to celebrate the birthdays of that month, so we can all get together to wish happy birthday, a very important thing for these children lacking in affection.
